Editorial: Cleveland City Council - Size Matters

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

May be hard to believe, but back in the 1800's Cleveland City Council had 50 members. Today, only 19 members. Still, it is larger than necessary, and more than we can afford.

In this incredibly shrinking city, from a population near one million a half-century ago, to under 400,000 today, size really does matter…at least when it comes to the size of city council.

By comparison, Columbus has far more residents than Cleveland, but gets by with just seven council members - the same scenario in cities like Miami and Portland.

Well, there are some who support a larger council, mostly the council members themselves but certainly there must be a more efficient way to run a city than to pay council members $74,000 a year to run their own little fiefdoms. Because of population loss, the city, by law, will soon shed two of its council seats. But, we shouldn't stop there.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
