AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

A warning from the Akron Police Department.

The current trend for scrappers and copper thieves is to look for houses with key lock boxes attached to doorknobs of vacant properties. The thieves smash the lockbox open and let themselves in, then cut out the copper plumbing. There have been several recent break-ins. The properties with lockboxes tend to be sellable or rentable, and the utilities are usually on. This often leaves a huge mess, with standing water in basements with running furnaces and water heaters.

If you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please call the Akron Police Department at 330-375-2181.
