ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

An Adrian Police officer says he was on his break at the Wesco gas station on West Maumee Street in Adrian when a suspect stole two Five Hour Energy drinks.  When the officer confronted the suspect outside the store, the suspect said he was in a hurry to get to the Lenawee County Hard Labor Detail for a previous arrest.

Adrian Police say a clerk told the officer, who was inside the store, that 22-year-old Mitchell Hikes took two of the drinks from the front counter. According to police Hikes, while watching the officer, went to the back corner of the store and placed them in his pocket. Police say Hikes then paid for two other drinks with his father and exited the store.  The store's clerk then told the officer Hikes had not paid for the energy drinks.  The officer followed Hikes out of the store and confronted him about the drinks, which the officer says he could see in the suspect's coat pocket.

Police say when the officer approached Hikes, he asked the officer to let him go because he was in a hurry to get to the Lenawee County Hard Labor Detail.  According to Adrian Police, Hikes has been convicted of at least three drug-related crimes.  When pressed by the officer, police say Hikes handed over one of the drinks and claimed he had forgotten to pay for it. According to police another 5 Hour Energy was found when the suspect was searched.

Hikes was issued a citation for Retail Fraud and released. Police say he was then taken to the Hard Labor Detail by his parents.
