Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp announced Monday that the suspect in a Friday standoff shot himself in the chest before being taken to the hospital.
The standoff closed Airport Highway for more than 7 hours Friday. Police say 51-year-old Jeffery Derden was arrested for OVI by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Friday morning. After being released to his wife police say he threatened to kill himself, which started the standoff.
An Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant says Derden registered a .133 blood alcohol content at the time of the arrest. Troopers say Derden was acting normally, so he was released after the arrest.
The sheriff says Derden had recently been hired as a truck driver, and was apparently upset because his OVI arrest would jeopardize that new job.
Derden was taken to a local hospital and placed in the intensive care unit. No information on his condition was available Monday.
