BEREA, OH (WOIO) -
Ray Horton, the Browns new Defensive Coordinator has watched the tape of his new players, and says he's impressed.
"What I saw was big men that can run and little guys that will hit, and if you give me those two things we'll be a good defense," said Horton as he was introduced at the Browns training facility in Berea.
Horton says the Browns defense will be a hybrid, one that will use multiple fronts, depending on the game situation.
Flexibility is the key for a coach, he believes, and he refused to get bogged down in labeling the defense as a 3-4 or a 4-3 other than to say the Browns will be an attacking, blitzing defense.
"We bring little guys because they run and hit, I bring bug guys because they can run, I've got the perfect mix here, big guys that can run and little guys that can hit," said Horton.
And that was a phrase he repeated over and over as he sounded, at least, that he was impressed with the players he has to work with.
Horton also made it clear that it is his job to build the defense around the parameters of what the head coach, Rob Chudzinski wants. The style of play will clearly be different than what Browns fans have watched the last two years, but Horton and Chudzinski believe they have the players to play a multi front attacking style.
"If you're a good football player, you're a good football player. I don't think the scheme is so different that good football players won't fit and be able to play in this scheme," said Chudzinski.
