(WOIO) -
This has been an active season for politically inflammatory speech. Not surprising really in this age of highly partisan politics. But while our First Amendment guarantees free speech, there are those who believe in limitations on that freedom in the name of political correctness.
Such is the case with Ohio Board of Education President Debe Terhar. She posted a picture of Hitler on her personal Facebook page with the Hitler quote "To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens." It was an in artful shot at President Obama's plans for stricter gun control.
Well, political operatives on the left immediately called for her resignation or, at the very least, that she publicly apologize. An apology was also demanded by the Cleveland Plain Dealer in an editorial —an odd commentary from a newspaper that ought to champion free speech.
Ms. Terhar made her comments not as a public official but on her own time and on her personal Facebook page.
But, more importantly folks, her expression - inappropriate though it may be - is guaranteed her by the constitution. Her critics - including The Plain Dealer - ought to heed another quote, this one by George Washington who said, "If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led like sheep to the slaughter."
Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
