CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
The Department of Public Works has entered into a contract with RestorX MD to clean the 100-year-old West Side Market in the aftermath of a fire that occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 30.
In a press release the city stated the contract will cost approximately $276,000 and the work, which is scheduled to start on Sunday, February 3, will take approximately 5 to 10 days.
RestorX MD is a Mentor, Ohio based disaster recovery company, with a specialty in fire damage.
Equipment will be moved in on Saturday, February 2 and the cleaning will begin in the basement of the Market House Sunday morning.
The City of Cleveland will pay for the clean up out of capital funds previously identified for West Side Market upgrades and improvements.
The City of Cleveland expedited this contract by executing a Mayor's Emergency, which allows the City to move forward quickly in emergency situations. A Mayor's Emergency requires the signature of the Mayor, the Finance Director and the President of Cleveland City Council.
"We value the West Side Market and the impact that it and our vendors, have on our community and economy," said Public Works Director Michael Cox. "Restoring it to full operation is our number one goal."
Today, 20 city laborers worked to help remove the products that were in the West Side Market at the time of the fire. Two waste collection trucks were on hand to haul it away. This work will continue on Monday.
Vendors were present during this process and began removing personal belongings as well.
The Produce Arcade was open today and will be able to operate during its normal business hours.
