AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

An Army veteran's Akron home was demolished on Tuesday morning.

Larry Modic bought the Manchester Road house in the city's Kenmore neighborhood in the spring of 2012, not realizing the city had it on a list to be condemned and demolished.

As Modic was making repairs when his power was shut off, then his other utilities. He said he wanted to fix it up and leave the home and property to his grandchildren and family.

Modic lost a lengthy battle with the city. The situation then escalated when Modic sent a threatening e-mail, and was later arrested by the SWAT team. They found loaded rifles, a handgun, ammo and a flak jacket inside the home.

Modic checked himself into the VA Medical Center in Cleveland.  The Army vet, who suffers from depression, is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict and has no criminal history.

State Rep. Zack Milkovich is helping Modic store his belongings, and also donating $1K for a new house.

"When people go out of their way to help me, it does my heart good, you know," Modic said.
