CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Ramon Torres was found guilty by a jury after an eleven day trial in the shooting death of Jaquan Sims back in September of 2011.
The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office says Torres, 23, of Cleveland, was found guilty of two counts of Murder, nine counts of Felonious Assault, one count of Improperly Discharging a Firearm at or into a Habitation or School, and one count of Having Weapons While Under Disability.
On September 19, 2011, Ramon Torres and co-defendant Pierre Chatmon, 23, of Cleveland, were among a group of males who were involved in a confrontation near West 95th Street and Denison Avenue.
The group of males were outside a residence taunting and threatening the family inside after a fight between the two groups earlier in the day. Several shots were fired into the home from the group of males outside.
A bullet struck the victim, 16-year-old Jaquan Sims, in the head as he looked out the peep hole of his front door. He was transported by EMS to Metro Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Torres was arrested October 21, 2011, by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Chatmon was arrested on October 27, 2011.
On November 9, 2012, a jury found Chatmon guilty of two counts of Murder with firearm specifications, ten counts of Felonious Assault with firearm specifications, and one count of Improperly Discharging a Firearm at or into a Habitation or School with firearm specifications. On January 7, 2013, Chatmon was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
Torres' sentencing is set for Thursday, February 7, 2013, at 1:00 pm. He faces a maximum of life in prison.
