Public Safety Committee passes law to ban hand held cell phones in Cleveland

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The Cleveland Public Safety Committee passed a law to ban hand held cell phones while driving on Wednesday morning.

The law still has to be approved by full council.

Councilman Zack Reed says it's a safety issue in Cleveland, just like it is in California. Drivers are four times more likely to have a crash while talking or holding a phone while driving.

Council is pushing to have it take effect when the new statewide ban on texting behind the wheel goes into effect in March.
