Chardon schools to mark one year anniversary of shooting tragedy

It was one year ago this month that tragedy struck the Chardon School District

According to school trauma experts, the one year marker may lead to a range of upsetting reactions, even among individuals who are psychologically healthy.

A memorial walk and concert are among the events planned to commemorate the first anniversary. The rest of the events are listed below:

Friday, February 22nd

Press Conference 11:00 am - Chardon at the One-Year Mark

Location: Geauga County Library Administrative Center, 12701 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon, Ohio.

Panel will include Superintendent Joseph Bergant, High School Principal Andy Fetchik, Mayor Phil King, Chardon Healing Fund Chair and Vice Chair Jenniffer Deckard and Tracy Jemison, Kate Biddle, Assistant VP of Clinical Services at Beech Brook, and several Chardon High School students.

Tuesday, February 26th

Chardon High School Commemorative Concert 7:00 pm - St. Mary Church, 401 North St. Chardon

Wednesday, February 27th

Day of Remembrance - Schools will be in session 

7:30 am Day of Service at Chardon High School
12:20pm Students, staff, first-responders begin Memorial Walk to Chardon Square
12:35 pm Gathering for Remembrance and Renewal on the Square with students, staff and parents
1:00 pm Return walk to Chardon High School for refreshments and dismissal
6:30 pm Candle Light Vigil on Chardon Square - hosted by the City of Chardon
7:00 pm Memorial Concert by Chardon Methodist Church Choir at Park Auditorium - sponsored by the City of Chardon


TJ Lane is charged in the February 27 shooting at Chardon High School, which he has admitted to. 

Police say Lane entered the cafeteria at Chardon High School and opened fire. 

17-year-old Russell King, Jr., 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 16-year-old Demetrius Hewlin were killed in the shooting. 17-year-old Nick Walczak remains paralyzed from the waist down. 18-year-old Joy Rickers and a 6th, unidentified victim were treated and released from the hospital.
