UPDATE: Alcohol factor in fatal Hopple St. viaduct crash

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Authorities say alcohol appears to be a factor in a fatal accident on the Hopple Street viaduct.

Police say Latonya Colbert, 39, was driving a Chevrolet Impala westbound on the viaduct towards Western Northern Blvd on Wednesday. She reportedly went left of center and hit Tony Smith, 57, head-on, in a gray Kia Spectra. It happened just after 2 p.m.

Both Colbert and Smith were trapped in their vehicles as a result of the crash, and neither were wearing a seatbelt.

Colbert was taken to UC Medical Center in serious condition. Smith was also taken to UCMC with life threatening injuries where he was later pronounced dead.

Both directions of Hopple Street were shut down, but authorities expect the road to reopen by rush hour. Metro service in the area was also running a detour, but is now back to its normal route.

Police say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit at (513) 352-2514.
