The Springfield Township Police Department along with Springfield Local Schools held an A.L.I.C.E. training for staff Friday.

"We have to quit teaching our kids to become victims. We need to teach them that there is a possibility that they can get out of the situation alive," said Sgt. Eric East, Springfield Township Police.

A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate.

It's the practice quickly becoming the preferred procedure for many school districts throughout the nation for dealing with and reacting to active killer situations.

"A lot of these school shootings, the victims were found huddled in a corner where they went into their traditional lockdown.," said Sgt. East.

Police ran through drills with Springfield Township teachers trying to teach them a new, proactive way of handling a school shooter.

"Definitely different. I know feel like I have more opportunities to defend myself and my students now knowing what we can do instead of sitting back in a corner quietly waiting," said Angie Calloway.
