Kenisha Pruitt pleaded guilty to aggravated murder charges Friday.
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Toledo mother Kenisha Pruitt has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder charges in the death of her infant who was then placed in a freezer in April 2012.
On Friday morning, Pruitt pleaded guilty to the one count of aggravated murder during the last pretrial scheduled in Lucas County Common Pleas Court. Prosecutors dropped abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence charges in the plea arrangement.
Pruitt was sentenced 20 years to life in prison, but will be eligible for parole after 20 years.
In a short statement, Pruitt said she was sorry, but admitted to drowning the infant in a tub, tying a string around its neck and putting it in the freezer to hide it. She also mentioned the baby's father, Antonio Cervantes, in her statement.
Cervantes was previously indicted on involuntary manslaughter, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates announced at a press conference Friday morning they will not pursue more charges against Cervantes.
Police said a landlord who was cleaning out the couple's home on Paine Avenue in east Toledo mid-April discovered the infant's body. The infant was wrapped in a garbage bag and frozen solid.
A few months after the baby was found, the Lucas County coroner determined the child was born alive, and the cause of death was "ligature strangulation and submersion in water." It was then that the coroner determined the child's death was a homicide.
