BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) officials are hoping a makeover to the campus recreation center can help the school recruit more students.

The rec center hasn't changed since 1979, the year it was built. And although students say it has a homey feel, they can't wait for renovations.

"It gets crowded, and a couple of the machines have had problems working, but it's just because they're being overused, and we just need more expansion," said Christian Miskell, a student that works out often at the center.

The building was taken off the admissions tour a few years ago due to wear and tear that make the building less attractive. The university's goal is to get it back on that tour.

"Basically the building is going to get a facelift," said Steve Kampf, director of recreation and wellness at BGSU. "The whole front of the building comes off, all the wood paneling is gone, all new paint, all new equipment, all new floorings…basically a whole new look to the facility."

The project will cost a little over $13 million, but officials said they believe the new center will attract new students. Current students seem to agree.

"Sometimes we have to go around something that needs to be fixed or just have maintenance on," said student and personal trainer Anne Yenrick. "I think having new equipment will make it a little bit less difficult to work with clients."

Renovations begin this summer, and school officials hope it will be completed by the fall of 2014.
