I am Susan Junkins responding to Bill Applegate's cell phone legislation editorial.

If you are on Ohio roads, you have either been a victim or near-victim of a driver who is on the phone or otherwise distracted. These drivers fade into other lanes, don't use signals, roll through stop signs and lights, and drive at inappropriate speeds. Repeatedly, we have been told of the dangers of using cell phones while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010, the last year for which we have these statistics, 3,092 people were killed in distracted driving accidents.  You are twenty-three times more likely to be involved in an accident if you are on your cell phone.

While we all have demands on our personal and professional time, to suggest that we allow this dangerous practice to continue without legislation is ludicrous. I encourage state lawmakers to enact legislation making distracted driving a primary offense with stiff graduated penalties. Please don't text and drive. I want my family to arrive home safely.

Thank you.
