AKRON, OH (WOIO) -
Akron Zips starting point guard Alex Abreu was in court Friday answering to drug charges.
Abreu and another man, Austin Durgala, both pleaded not guilty to trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana.
Abreu must also check in with the courts once a week.
The men were arrested Thursday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. Both were charged after detectives seized over five pounds of marijuana at Durgala's East Dartmore Street home.
As a result, Abreu has been suspended from the team just one week from the Mid-American Conference tournament at The Q. The Zips are the #1 seed in the tournament.
The University released the following statement:
Junior point guard Alex Abreu has been suspended from The University of Akron men's basketball team indefinitely pending the outcome of a police investigation.
The University is aware of the situation and is currently gathering more information.
This is the second time Abreu has been suspended from the team. The first time was in November of 2011 for a violation of university policy.
