Middlefield police officers shot during deadly traffic stop

MIDDLEFIELD, OH (WOIO) -

Geauga County Sheriff confirms that two officers were shot during a routine traffic stop.

The incident took place on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at around 6:00 pm.

Residents of the Village of Middlefield say that they heard 12 gun shots ring out in the area of North State Ave. near Tare Creek Parkway.

The Geauga Police Department released information stating that the motive for the driver opening fire on the officers is not known at this time but that the driver exited the vehicle with a semi-automatic rifle and began shooting at the officers.

It is reported that both officers returned fire and when it was all over the one female officer was life-flighted to Metrohealth Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to the hand and another male officer was transported to a nearby hospitals for treatment of fragment wounds to the leg.

The driver was shot and killed.  His body was still on the scene of the crime when 19 Action News arrived.
