Prison for woman who posed as veterinarian

SUMMIT COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

The woman convicted of pretending to be a veterinarian was sentenced to prison on Friday.

Brandi Tomko will serve 18 months behind bars for ID fraud, cruelty to animals, drug possession, forgery and practicing without a license.

Tomko pretended to be a vet at C & D Animal Hospital in Akron. Police say Tomko wrote prescriptions and even performed surgery on animals, but she is not listed as a licensed veterinarian or vet tech.

Tomko was left in charge of the animal hospital when the owner left the state for a while. She quickly ran the business into the ground, and when she stopped paying the legitimate veterinarians who worked there, they quit.

According to police, Tomko couldn't let the doors close because she needed the cash for drugs.

It is not mandatory that someone convicted of the crimes Tomko was to be sentenced to prison, but because of a recent conviction in Medina County, Judge Paul Gallagher sent her to the prison.
