CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

It was a change in many ways that no one expected.

Republican Senator Rob Portman from Ohio stepped outside of his beliefs, comfort and acceptance to share that his son is gay.

Rob Portman told CNN, "He told us that he was gay, and that it was not a choice, and that it's just part of who he is, and that's who he'd been that way for as long as he could remember."

And now he is changing his stance on gay marriage and many people are talking about.

19 Action News hit the streets to speak with locals and get their reaction to the senator's new attitude toward gay marriage.

John Katsaros owns Twist Bar and he is a human rights activist.

Next Sunday he will participate in a marriage for equality rally and says Portman made the right decision.

"I think unless it affects your life immediately it's hard to walk in other peoples shoes and now he's getting it.  He has a child, it's affecting his life," said Katsaros.

Carrie Tanko from Cleveland says she imagines Portman's son struggled with his decision in coming out to his parents.

I think it's hard for any person to tell their parents what they are not knowing she said.

But some say in this case, Portman a staunch Republican, supporting gay marriage now is a political move.
