Scott Kazmir is the Indians fifth starter, at least for now. The Indians made the right decision on this one. Kazmir will be added to the 25-man roster on April 6th in order to face Toronto. Carlos Carrasco will break camp with the big league club, but will be serving a suspension he picked up at the end of the 2011 season. Carrasco was out all of last year and has not been able to serve the suspension.
Keeping Kazmir and sending down Carrasco would be prudent move. Carrasco is younger and has a better arm, he's also more talented. But, the young right-hander still has an option left. That's bad news for him, good news for the Tribe's flexibility. It allows them to keep both.
Kazmir has had one bad start this spring, so it's not like he hasn't earned the job anyway. It's not a situation like Daisuke Matsuzaka, where he hung around for a while just because he was a veteran.
Kazmir will be the only left hander in the rotation. If it's all the same between him and the righty, give me the southpaw. If he fails to produce as the season develops, it's an easy fix. Designate him for assignment and call up Carrasco. Carrasco is not exactly a finished product anyway, why not give him a little extra time in the minors anyway.
