Editorial: The school strike goes on

The Strongsville teachers' strike is in its fifth week and is now testing the nerves of even passive observers.

This week the teachers offered to go back to work if the school board would accept binding arbitration. That's where an independent mediator would evaluate the positions of both sides and ultimately decide on a contract.

But the school board said no…arguing that it cannot allow an outsider the power to spend Strongsville taxpayer money -- and so the strike goes on.

It's hard to feel sorry for teachers who make as much as $60,000 a year plus some very nice benefits. But in turning down the arbitration offer, the Strongsville school board needs to better explain why this route to settlement is so unacceptable.

In the balance, of course, are the students who are being short-changed on their education.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
