8 internet cafes raided by state agents

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

After a lengthy investigation, agents with the Ohio Department of Public Safety's Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU) lead multiple law enforcement teams during raids on eight internet gambling locations in Cuyahoga County on Wednesday.

Search warrants were also served at a New Jersey corporation and a residence by OIU agents and New Jersey law enforcement officials.

The raids are the result of a case investigation that began in August 2011, by OIU enforcement agents where liquor establishments were operating illegal gaming machines.

In the state of Ohio, liquor permit premises are prohibited from operating illegal gaming. OIU also provides law enforcement assistance and expertise in non-permit establishments when requested.

"Our agents have put a lot of work and expertise into these investigations," Public Safety Director Thomas P. Charles said. "We have been investigating the operations of these machines in Ohio's bars since they began appearing several years ago, and we will continue to work to shut down these kinds of operations."

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty, as well as several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies teamed up with OIU.

Charges are pending.

The locations of the search warrants included: Crystal Sports Bar, 3357-3359 Fulton Rd. and Collinwood Sweepstakes Café, 15624 Lakeshore Blvd. both in Cleveland; Loco Leprechaun, 24545 Center Ridge Rd. and Infinity 2, 30670 Detroit Rd. both in Westlake; and Emerald Isle, 22574 Lakeshore Blvd. and Players Club, 26193 Euclid Ave., both in Euclid.

Agents also worked with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey to obtain search warrants for VS2 Worldwide Communications/P&E Technologies and a private residence.

Administrative charges were also filed against the Crystal Sports Bar and Loco Leprechaun liquor permits for illegal gambling violations.

The administrative case will be presented to the Ohio Liquor Control Commission after all criminal proceedings are complete.
