University of Akron senior Nick Banke was named Mid-American Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Banke was a double winner at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships last weekend, taking first place in both the men's shot put and discus competitions. The native of Mishawaka, Ind., claimed gold with personal-record marks in both events as he went 58-04.25 to win the shot put and 183-11 to win the discus.
With those marks, Banke enters the week ranked No. 1 in the MAC for discus and No. 2 for shot put. He is the third member from the Zips men's team to earn athlete of the week honors from the league this outdoor season, following Gabriel Genovesi (Track, March 26) and Shawn Barber (Field, Apr. 1).
After fouling his first throw in the discus, Banke, who contributed 20 points to UA's team score, set a PR with each of his next two tosses. His first, going 180-09, would have been enough to win the event and his second went event farther at 183-11. Banke dominated the shot put as well as he out-threw the next closest competitor by nearly two full feet.
The Zips will split squads this week with a small group competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in California and the rest making a short trip south to the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
