Shots fired at Highland Park, near children

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police are searching for the person that started shooting during an altercation at Highland Park, with children in the area.

Children were playing baseball in the park, and parents were watching from the bleachers, when shots were fired. Now parents say they want whoever is responsible off the streets.

"People that do stuff like that, I guess they just don't have the common sense to know that there's little kids out here that are innocent," said Brittni Kiernan, who lives nearby. "If they get shot, it's just going to tear so many other people apart."

No one was hurt, but the shots turned an ordinary day at the park into moments of terror.

Police say some young men were arguing, and one suspect flashed a gun. People involved in the altercation scattered and hopped into cars, and then one suspect fired at a vehicle, according to police.

"If I saw somebody pull out a gun, I really don't know what I would do," Kiernan said. "I probably would start running with my kids and pray to God that they don't start shooting at us…It kind of makes me nervous to bring my kids up here."

Police also said one of the cars trying to get away hit someone involved in the altercation. That person took off running. Then another accident occurred when the vehicle speeding away hit a car at the park entrance. Now police are searching for those involved.

"People need to start thinking more about other people, and not just themselves," Kiernan said. "Think about the consequences when they do stuff like that, ‘cause they could end up in jail for the rest of their lives, not only hurting themselves, but hurting a lot of other people."
