OU: Employee finds white powdery substance in envelope

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, OH (WOIO) -

Thursday morning an Ohio University employee reported receiving an envelope containing a white powdery substance.

An update on the university's web site says the incident happened around 11:18 am.

As a precaution, the Ohio University Police Department (OUPD) quickly evacuated the Legal Affairs and People's Bank sections of the West Union Street Office Center and took other steps to isolate the potentially affected area.

According to OU, at this time, Smith Street is closed and the area is barricaded.

The employee who opened the envelope has been released from the hospital and the Ohio University Police Department is working with an Ohio National Guard WMD team from Rickenbacker Air Force Base and the FBI, who is handling the criminal investigation.

There is nothing conclusive to report about the substance at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The police believe this incident to be isolated to the east end of WUSOC and no further action is required at this time by Ohio University faculty, staff, or students.

Ohio University expects both buildings will open tomorrow and operate during normal office hours.
