While the Deerfield Lady Knights track team defends their state championship at this weekend's GISA State Track Meet, the boys are looking to get back to the top of the mountain.
The Knights last won the state title in 2009. They have come close since, including a second place finish in 2010 and a third place finish last year.
Head Coach Craig Rhodes feels like this might be his team's year because of all the experience the team has gained by coming close in years past.
He says this year's team set out to win the ring at the beginning of the season and they aren't leaving Hugh Mills Stadium without it.
"At the beginning of this season, our goal was to win the region championship and the state championship. And we're an old group. We're predominantly a junior and senior team, and we've been here before, and we've been through the battles," Rhodes says. "So we're hoping we can get the ring this year."
The state meet continues Friday.
Friday's schedule includes field events and the 800m run finals.
