An excellent team-pitching performance led by starter Jordan Cooper and a monster home run by outfielder Carlos Moncrief helped the Akron Aeros to a series-winning 2-1 victory over the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park on Sunday.
Moncrief, who won Saturday night's game with a game-ending single in the bottom of the ninth inning, won today's game when he led off the seventh inning with the score tied at 1-1 and crushed a 1-0 pitch from Bowie starter Kevin Gausman over the batter's eye in dead-center field. Canal Park's batter's eye reaches 60 feet high (12' outfield wall plus the 48' batter's eye).
The Aeros were in the game because Cooper allowed only one run on five hits while on three days of rest. After Akron took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when outfielder Tyler Holt and later scored on Chun Chen's sacrifice fly, Bowie responded with its only run of the game in the top of the second inning. DH Caleb Joseph led off with a walk, went to third on Henry Urrutia's double and scored on Zelous Wheeler's groundout to second.
Reliever Jose Flores followed Cooper with scoreless sixth and seventh innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Bryan Price threw a scoreless eighth inning following the Moncrief home run and Austin Adams picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning that included a pair of strikeouts.
Giovanny Urshela, who made a rare shortstop start, went 2-for-3 and Holt was the only other Aeros' player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with the first-inning double.
The win came in a tidy 2:15 and moved the Aeros back to the .500 mark at 15-15 for the first time this season. They are 9-3 since April 22 when they were a season-low six games under .500 at 6-12.
The Aeros kick off a three-game series vs. the Erie Seawolves at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night at Canal Park. RHP Victor Larez (4-0, 3.54) will start for Erie, while RHP Will Roberts (1-0, 0.00) will make the start for Akron.
