Canton teen waits for liver transplant

CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

He doesn't have dreams of playing in the NBA, his hoop dream is a liver transplant.

15-year-old Erik Loy says, "Seeing other people go through it and how much success there is it's not quite as scary."

At the age of 12 he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease.   The same one his uncle Steve had and football star Walter Peyton, that ultimately took both of their lives.

Erik's dad, Tom prays for a donor, "It's scarring of the bio ducts, it's the primary ducts of the liver. There is no cure or this disease."

Erik has been moved to the top of the transplant list with LifeBanc, because a lesion was found on his liver.  Until a transplant happens Eric is home schooled to avoid getting sick and waits patiently for an organ donor.

To look at this 15-year-old, you'd think he is the picture health and is the typical teen with a typical messy room. That's the outside.  On the inside Erik is at war with his body.  Every day he takes it to the rim.  And his next shot is the most important, a shot at getting new liver.

He says, "It would just mean the world to me. Cause it's a second chance at life, it's such a gift!"
