Turnpike tolls may be increasing soon

(Toledo News Now) -

Concerned citizens voiced their opinions Monday at a meeting in Maumee about the impact higher turnpike tolls would have.

The proposal includes an increase of 25 cents more for cars on EZ Pass and 50 cents more for non-EZ cars, $1 for trucks on EZ Pass and $1.25 for non-EZ trucks. That's an increase each year for the next 10 years.

The Executive Director of the Turnpike Commission Rick Hodges says the higher tolls will help with construction projects and create 65,000 new construction jobs.  He says he doesn't think higher tolls will mean more traffic on side routes because Ohio tolls will still be lower than most other states, even in 10 years.

Some truck drivers and every-day drivers disagree.

"We'll just come across Route 20 and not pay it," said trucker Bob Plantikow.  "That's what we'll do. I do that a lot of times anyway."

"The rates are pretty high right now," said Mark Kolanko, who drives the turnpike for work a lot.  "So, I think if they go higher that's a concern at this point."

The Turnpike Commission is hoping to make a decision by July 8.
