Rutgers’ Jerome Seagears transfers To Auburn

Jerome Seagears, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound rising junior guard who played two seasons at Rutgers, has transferred to Auburn, head coach Tony Barbee announced on Wednesday. Auburn is petitioning to the NCAA for him to be eligible for this upcoming season.

Seagears averaged 6.5 points, 2.6 assists and 2.2 rebounds in 27.2 minutes in playing all 31 games as a sophomore last year for Rutgers, starting 19. He shot 37.0 percent from the floor, 38.1 percent from 3-point range and 73.8 percent from the foul line. He scored a career-high 21 points at Connecticut on a career-best 4-of-7 3-pointers and had 15 points and seven rebounds vs. DePaul in the Big East Tournament.

The Silver Spring, Md., native averaged 7.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 25.8 minutes as a freshman in 2011-12 while starting 25 of the final 26 games. He made the game-winning 3-pointer with 13 seconds left in overtime en route to 16 points, six assists and four rebounds in the win at Seton Hall. Seagears had 14 points, making all three 3-point attempts, at Marquette and had 11 points and seven assists vs. Villanova. He added 13 points in the upset win over No. 10 Florida.

A 2011 Jordan Brand Classic East Region All-Star rated as the nation's No. 89 prospect by Scout.com, Seagears attended Flora MacDonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C., in 2010-11 where he averaged 32.0 points, 9.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds under coach Derrick Bond. He was a 2011 Elite Basketball showcase all-star selection.

Seagears averaged 18 points, 9.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in 2009-10 as a junior at Flora MacDonald Academy. He was a PANGOS All-America Camp top 20 all-star selection in summer 2010. He was a first-team All-Gazett, first-team All-Montgomery County Extra and first-team all-league selection as a sophomore at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md., in 2008-09.

Seagears joins six Auburn newcomers in November signees Ronald Delph, a 7-foot, 235-pound center from Winter Haven, Fla.; Benas Griciunas, a 7-foot, 225-pound center from Silute, Lithuania.; and Tahj Shamsid-Deen, a 5-foot-10, 162-pound point guard from Decatur, Ga. The late signees include Matthew Atewe, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound center from Brampton, Ont., Canada.; Chris Griffin, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward from Tallahassee, Fla.; and Dion Wade, a 6-foot-7, 180-pound  guard from Antwerp, Belgium.
