Facts from Meteorologist Ryan Wichman about the Okla. Tornado

Moore, OK has a long history of violent tornadoes:  (F-2) 1998, (F-5) 1999, (F-4) 2003, (EF-4) 2010, and  (EF-4+) 2013.

 

-The tornado will most likely have a damage path will be ~1 mile wide. The reports of a 2 mile wide tornado is likely well overdone.

 

-A tornado warning was issued 16 minutes before the tornado touched down, around 30 minutes before it entered the city of Moore. The area had been highlighted for the potential of strong tornadoes for several days.

 

-Moore, OK is only a few miles from the offices of the Storm Prediction Center, which issues severe weather outlooks for the entire country everyday.

 

-Basements are expensive to build in many parts of Oklahoma because of the hard packed clay soil. Most homes to do not have basements or underground shelters.

 

-2000 Census had 41,000 people living in Moore, OK.
