Stricklin leaving Kent State

Posted: Updated:
KENT, OH (WOIO) -

Scott Stricklin has announced he has accepted the position of head baseball coach at the University of Georgia on Monday (June 3) after filling the same role at his alma mater Kent State for the past nine seasons.

"I'd like to thank Scott for his leadership in our baseball program," said Kent State Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen.  "While our accomplishments on the field are well-known, the commitment from Scott and our student-athletes from an academic perspective is unmatched and recognized nationally.  I wish Scott, Cheri and the kids nothing but the best."

Stricklin had a coaching record of 350-188 while leading the Golden Flashes to five regular season conference championships, five Mid-American Conference Tournament titles, five NCAA Regional berths, one NCAA Super Regional berth and the first College World Series appearance in program history.

Off the field, Stricklin has maintained academic success for the team, as well. Through the 2012 season, Kent State baseball has registered a perfect 1,000 score for three consecutive seasons in the NCAA's Academic Performance Rate report. Kent State is one of only 16 schools and the only public school to have a perfect score in those three years. The team posted its highest grade point average ever of 3.264 in the fall of 2012, including 27 players with a 3.0 GPA or higher.  They also set a new program high with a 3.06 spring semester GPA this season.

In his nine years at the helm of the Golden Flashes, Stricklin was a three-time MAC Coach of the Year, two-time American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Mideast Coach of the Year and was named the College Baseball Insider.com Co-National Coach of the Year after his 2012 campaign.  He was also the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team assistant coach in 2011.

A national search for Stricklin's replacement will begin immediately.  Associate Head Coach Mike Birkbeck will serve as interim head coach.
