Susan G. Komen 3-Day will not return to Cleveland in 2014

Posted: Updated:

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day will not return to Cleveland in 2014.  The announcement was made on Tuesday, but plans for this year's 3-Day on August 2-4 will go on as scheduled.

The decision to cancel next year's 3-Day, according to the foundation, was due to declining participation levels over the last five years in several cities. The decrease made it difficult for the organization to financially sustain the nationwide event.

"Basically there was a trend of eroding participation, in the 3-day race over the last four years," said Sean Shacklett, Executive Director for Susan G. Komen, N.E. Ohio.

Since 2003 the 3-day has raised more than $740 million.  Despite the fact that each participant is required to raise $2,300 to take part, over the last five years, the National Office says money problems have made it difficult to hold events in all 14 cities.

"The Cleveland is a smaller market so in order to shore up and stabilize the revenue trend for the 3-day race the home office decided  too not hold the race in 2014 in Cleveland," Shacklett said.

The 3-Day will not be returning to Arizona, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. in 2014. Again, the 2013 3-Day series will continue as planned.

The 2014 3-Day will return to Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and the Twin Cities.
