AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

A 31-year-old Akron woman was taken into custody Tuesday morning, during a protest to save a tree.

Sharon Pritt is now charged with obstruction and trespassing.

Akron Police Officers say Pritt had been trying to prevent the Ash tree at 795 West Market Street from being cut down. The tree is over 100-years-old.

Pritt and other activists have been protesting since last week, spending many hours up in the tree itself.

Tuesday morning the tree cutting company showed up and Pritt was in the tree.

Pritt allegedly still refused to come out when Akron Police arrived.  Akron Firefighters brought a ladder and went up to talk to her. After about an hour, Pritt put on a harness and came down.

She is now locked up in the Summit County Jail.

The tree cutting company and the property owners are letting people take pieces of the tree for souvenirs.
