New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will miss the next 12 weeks of practice after undergoing lower back surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins to repair a herniated disk in his lower back that bothered him during the 2012 season. Pierre-Paul received several epidural injections throughout the season to help aid the pain. During that season, the Pro Bowler's productivity dropped from 16.5 sacks in 2011 to 6.5 in 2012.
Pierre-Paul said in a statement from the Giants, "The treatment I've been doing has helped manage the issue, but this procedure is going to get me fully healthy and there should be no more pain. I'm going to do everything the doctors tell me to do during my rehab so I can be back playing the game I love at a high level as quickly as possible."
The Giants believe Pierre-Paul should be ready to play when the 2013 NFL season begins.
