(WOIO) -

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee's last day on the job will be July 1. He held a news conference on Wednesday morning to talk about his sudden retirement.

He says several factors played into his decision to retire.

"I run the University as if I were 36-years-old, but I'm 69," Gee said. "I don't want to be the president of a University and run it like a 69-year-old. I want to run it in a way that I can run full tilt. I don't ever want to lose a step. I'm not leaving because of that, but I feel those are legitimate issues that I have to deal with."

According to Gee, he will still be very active and "fully engaged" in the University.

"I have devoted my life to higher education, and will continue to do so."

Gee made the announcement via email Tuesday.

"I recently returned from a vacation with my family, during which time I had a chance to consider the university's phenomenal achievements and the road that lies ahead for it. Ohio State now has a richness of new opportunities that would be the envy of most universities. During my days away, I also spent some time in self-reflection. And after much deliberation, I have decided it is now time for me to turn over the reins of leadership to allow the seeds that we have planted to grow. It is also time for me to re energize and refocus myself," said President Gee.

The decision comes after remarks he made last week about Notre Dame, Catholics and the SEC.

"The SEC can join the Big 10 when they learn to read and write," was among the many offensive remarks made at an Ohio State Athletics Council meeting.

Gee, who has since apologized, has repeatedly said it was only a harmless joke.

E. Gordon Gee served as president with Ohio State from 1990 - 1997 before returning in 2007.
