WILLOUGHBY, OH (WOIO) -

Willoughby Police are investigating a one-car accident that happened early Saturday evening on SR 84 east of Shankland Road.

Police say Benjamin Christman, 35 of Eastlake was driving his 1999 Mazda sedan westbound on SR 84 and drove off the right side of the road as he approached Shankland Road.

Christman struck a First Energy utility pole head-on snapping it into two pieces and continued westbound off the roadway striking two other metal sidewalk poles with the driver side of the vehicle and then striking a tree on the north side of the sidewalk.

The vehicle spun clockwise off of the tree and as it was spinning, the driver's door dug into the ground forcing it open.  That's when Christman was ejected from the car.

Willoughby Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene.  Christman was transported to Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby and later life-flighted to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment where he is listed in stable condition.

It did not appear that alcohol was involved in the crash.  First Energy responded to the scene to repair the utility pole.

The Willoughby Police Department is currently investigating the crash.  If anyone has any information regarding the crash, please contact Patrolman Charles Krejsa at 440-953-4212.
