Nashville Symphony ending in-house food service

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Schermerhorn Symphony Center is already facing foreclosure and is set to be auctioned at the end of the month. Now, the money problems at the Nashville Symphony are now costing jobs.

The symphony announced it plans to lay off 16 employees who provided food service, and 21 workers who had been on-call will no longer work during events.

In a statement, symphony management complimented the food service employees for their work and said they were provided with as much advance notice as possible of the layoffs.

"It's unfortunate and shouldn't have to happen," said Schermerhorn Cafe patron Matthew Garner.

The symphony will still rent out the building for events but will use a pre-approved list of caterers after Aug. 4.

Concessions and bar service will still be available during events.

"It remains my hope that the bank and the symphony can get together over the next few days and weeks to resolve the issues between them, come to an agreement and allow the symphony to continue to operate at the Schermerhorn," said Mayor Karl Dean. "I'm obviously paying attention to what is going on, and the city wants and I want the symphony succeed."

The symphony owes Bank of America more than $82 million in bonds. A public auction for the Schermerhorn Symphony Center is scheduled for 11 a.m. on June 28.
