NE Ohio crime fighting APP off to a good start

MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

Mentor Police have a new program that allows people to use an APP on their smart phone to help fight crime.

"It is a true partnership between law enforcement and the community," said Captain Ken Gunsth.

With the APP people can report anything from jaywalking to murder.

Here's how it works, first download the APP by visiting iWatchNeOhio on your smart phone, then you'll get three choices to send the information: by text, by pictures or by voicemail.

"I would probably use voice mail because you can send more information," said a passerby.

Police say in no way should the APP be used instead of calling 911.

"If you see a crime in progress please call 911 so you can talk to a dispatcher directly," said Captain Gunsth.

The APP program could have unlimited potential.

The program is barely a month old and has already met with some success as the detective bureau is investigating a narcotics tip sent through the APP.
