What to expect this afternoon...

Posted: Updated:

Today couldn't seem more "summery" with temps near 90 in the Upstate, high humidity, and afternoon storms starting to bubble up! Today we have about a 50-60% chance of seeing storms in any particular spot in the Upstate and about an 80% chance for mountain locations.  The atmosphere is PRIMED for storms to develop, but the good news is that there isn't much shear to help the storms organize or keep them going for too long.  Therefore, these storms will pop up quickly, not move much and then dissipate.  Heavy rain and lightning will be the primary threats, but damaging wind and small hail will be possible with a few of the stronger storms.

Timeframe: 3pm-9pm or so.

This is lightning safety awareness week, and I thought I'd mention one tidbit from the link I posted on yesterday's blog.  It's about HEAT lightning!  Ever heard of it?  Do you think it's caused by high temperatures?  Well, it's just a term for lightning you see at a distance, from a t-storm several miles away.  The lightning flashes light up the sky at night.  It isn't produced by heat, but the hot temps do help t-storm develop (along with other factors).

If you see lightning or hear thunder, get indoors and stay indoors until you can't hear the thunder for 20 mins.
