CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The transformation of the Cleveland Museum of Art is now a step closer to completion.  Sunday, the north galleries will open to the public.

"We're seeing art that has not been on view since 2005, so there is a lot of old friends and some new acquisitions as well," said Museum Director David Franklin.

And the new wing is stunning, with three galleries including the Art of the Americas gallery that includes beautiful Mayan stone and ceramic works.

The Textiles gallery is internationally renowned and features one of the finest Islamic and Italian collections in the world.

And the Japanese and Korean gallery is one of the preeminent collections in the United States, "The objects are of such great quality that it's so exciting to come in here everyday and just feel that power again, of great art," said Franklin.

The new wing manages to feel intimate and roomy at the same time, it's easy to imagine spending hours in just one gallery.  As for Franklin's favorite aspect of the new wing, "I think it's the beautiful installation, we really do a great job of displaying the art, making people feel seduced by it. It's like a theatrical experience as well as an art experience," he said.

The opening of the north wing is just the latest step in the transformational renovation of the Museum of Art.  The stunning atrium opened in October of 2012 and work continues on the west wing, it's expected to be complete by the grand re-opening date of December 31st of this year.
