CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The 25th Annual Cleveland Pride Parade, rally, and festival comes right on the heels of the controversial supreme court decision to essentially level the playing field when it comes to gay couples.

The parade is always about pride, but this year, attendee's say it was also about turning the tide in the court of public opinion as well.

At the parade were Shanice and Michelle Sims who left the country to get married.

"We got married in Canada", says Sims.

The Sims' couldn't marry in Cleveland or in Ohio for that matter, but this week the Supreme Court gave gay couples new hope.

Supreme Court Justices narrowly struck down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act. It would deny the same federal benefits heterosexual spouses have to same sex couples married in states where their marriage is legal.

"To me it equals human rights. Not just about marriage. It means human rights. We're all entitled to it." Said Larry Chrismar of Cleveland.

Cleveland Pride parade, rally and festival also celebrates LGBTQQA progress over the past year.

Today's pride, organizers say is an excellent primer for the Gay Games coming to Cleveland in August of next year.

The event continues tonight until 8 p.m. at Voinavich Park in Cleveland.
