A Toledo man is behind bars, after Ottawa Hills Police arrested him for allegedly breaking into a home.

According to online court documents, Rodney Horton walked into the homeowner's garage Tuesday. Investigators say he was trying to steal a laptop, a windshield wiper appliance, a bag of frozen tomatoes, and a can of sprite, but was thwarted when the homeowner saw him.

Police say Horton tried to run off, but was eventually arrested. He was booked into the Lucas County Jail, facing a number of charges.

Police want to remind Ottawa Hills residents to keep an eye out for their neighbors.

"It happens just once in a while, and summer's an easy time to do it," said Benjamin Baehren, an Ottawa Hills resident.

Police agree. Burglaries and thefts from homes and cars go up during the hot summer months. Ottawa Hills doesn't experience either of those crimes very often, but when they do, residents keep an eye out for their neighbors.

Police say with the help of area police and community members, they were able to catch Horton.

"They're always looking for something easy, like, cars that are parked in driveways, or that are spaced apart. And an easy open garage is something they can do quietly," explained Baehren.

An open garage is what police believe intrigued Horton. Police are warning residents to keep an eye out and try to keep garage doors closed if possible.

"If the police are saying to keep your garage doors shut and your doors locked and windows shut, that's just what you should do. They know best," said Baehren.
