CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cooking on the grill and taking a dip in the lake, it's a fourth of July tradition but mixed with the holiday fun is "water safety."

Gretchen Finniff is one of hundreds of parents at Edgewater Park and her three young sons love to splash in the lake but they have strict rules to follow.

Even with four lifeguards in the stands and two others in kayaks, this mom is not taking any chances.

"I think it's very important to keep an eye on what they're doing. A mother of three boys, it's a tough job to keep them in line. I really try to make sure I have enough other adults with me so they can also keep an eye on them. So I brought my sister along with me too," says Gretchen Finniff.

Finniff's seven-year-old son Declan says he knows the drill when he gets in the water.  "Don't go to close to the deep end, so I won't drown," says Declan Finniff.

Experts say there are three important rules to stick to when you're swimming.

First, stay in a guarded area.  Second, don't swim alone and lastly, children should always have an adult with them.

Parent Willie Johnson says he tells his kids to follow those rules. "He stays in the water in front of the picnic area where we are and stays where I can see him."

Finniff says the bottom line is to make sure she's teaching her kids the importance of water safety in order to prevent a tragedy.

"I have friends in the medical field that know how quick it happens," explains Finniff.

Experts say you should also teach your kids that swimming in open water is not the same as a swimming pool. Learn infant and child CPR, and always keep a phone close in case of an emergency.
