CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Baby rhino Juba celebrates his first birthday at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Friday.

Zoo officials gave the black rhinoceros a special watermelon and carrot "cake"!

Juba marked a significant milestone in the Zoo's black rhino program when he was born last year on July 1.

He is the first offspring for female Kibibbi which made the Zoo's other female adult rhino, Inge, a grandmother.

At birth he weighed about 80 pounds, but he's been gaining weight fast! In just 12 months he's put on about 1,100 pounds. When he's fully grown, Juba could weigh up to 3,000 pounds.

Black rhinos are critically endangered in the wild and there are less than 80 of them in North American zoos.

The Zoo's successful black rhino program is a coordinated effort between the curators, veterinarians, research staff members and zookeepers.

The Zoo's small crash of rhinos includes females Inge, 19, Kibibbi, 9, Johari, almost 3, and male Juba, now 1.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is located at 3900 Wildlife Way, off West 25th Street.
