CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

It is not exactly the bridge to nowhere, but more than a few curious commuters have been wondering about the huge chunk of the new Innerbelt Bridge that seems to be missing.

Not to worry, at least according to ODOT.  Construction on the final portion of the steel structure is set to begin very soon,  the majority of the steel is already on site, and all the structural steel work should be completed this month.

ODOT has, however, just awarded the contractor a second extension due to weather issues. The first extension was granted because of winter weather that slowed construction, the latest extension was granted for high winds and have pushed the opening of the bridge back until early November.

The next step after the structural steel is in place will be to pour the concrete for the bridge deck.  That process should be interesting to watch as it will be done in a specific engineering pattern to distribute stress evenly over the bridge during the concrete pour.

The demolition of the current bridge is still expected to start immediately after traffic starts flowing on the new bridge, although the contract for that work has not yet been awarded. The second new bridge, that will eventually handle all east bound traffic, is still set to open in the fall of 2016.

ODOT, recently, won a sustainability award from the Federal Highway Administration for water conservation and the limiting of emissions during the construction process.
