DALLAS, Texas - Kent State's Dri Archer (Laurel, Fla.) and Trayion Durham (Cincinnati, Ohio) were both named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List Thursday by the SMU Athletic Forum. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
The lightning and thunder combo make up two of the 63 preseason candidates. On the list for the second straight season, Archer and Durham each earned a spot onto last year's list in November.
The Golden Flashes are one of nine teams (Louisville, Georgia, TCU, Arizona State, Arkansas, BYU, Wisconsin, Baylor) with two running backs on the 2013 preseason list.
Named to the Paul Hornung and Maxwell Award Watch Lists earlier this summer, Archer led the nation in yards per carry (9.0) in 2012. He led the Flashes with 1,429 rushing yards on 159 carries. Sixteen of his 23 touchdowns were rushing.
Archer and Durham were both named to the All-Mid-American Conference Team as running backs last season. Durham collected 1,316 rushing yards on 276 carries with 14 touchdowns.
Semifinalists will be named Nov. 14, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on November 25. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on Dec. 2 to determine the recipient. The winner of the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12, on ESPN.
The Golden Flashes are coming off an unprecedented 11-win season, going 8-0 in Mid-American Conference play. Kent State kicks off the 2013 season Aug. 29 against Liberty at 6 p.m. inside Dix Stadium.
