Defense blows game, Indians lose in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:

With Scott Kazmir on the mound and the Indians in front 2-0 the night was looking promising for the Tribe. Then their defense decided to not show up.

In the 6th inning, with two outs and a runner on first, Brian Dozier hit a grounder near third base. Lonnie Chisenhall, on the move, could not come up with a fairly routine play. After the ball bounced away from him, Asdrubal Cabrera made an ill-advised throw to third trying to cut down the base runner there. That throw was off the mark, allowing Dozier, the tying run, to advance to second base. With two outs Trevor Plouffe delivered a game tying single into right.

In the 8th inning Joe Mauer slapped an RBI single off Joe Smith to score Pedro Florimon to give the Twins a 3-2 lead, and that was the final. In the 8th Nick Swisher made a defensive mistake that was not ruled an error.

With Detroit's loss in Kansas City the Indians stay 1.5 games back in the Central Division.
