MASSILLON, OH (WOIO) -

The Stark County Sheriff has identified the suspect killed in a hostage situation at Great Clips in Massillon on Sunday.

He is Shane Allen Ryan, 28, of Canton.

Police tell 19 Action News Ryan entered Great Clips around 5 p.m. looking for his estranged girlfriend, who is an employee there, but wasn't working at the time. Three employees and a patron were inside. One of the patrons dialed 911.

"My 8-year-old was in the middle of getting her hair cut, and my other two were sitting in chairs, and a younger guy came in and said, 'I need to talk to you guys,' he said, 'You might want to get your kids out of here."

Police say two employees were also able to get out, but a third was held hostage.  Another man called 911 saying his wife had called him from inside.

"My wife just called me saying that there is a guy holding her captive with a knife," said the caller.

"So is your wife inside Great Clips?" asked the operator.

"Yes, ma'am," said the caller.

SWAT team attempts to negotiate with Ryan were unsuccessful. The SWAT team proceeded to enter the salon in order to rescue the hostage, and subsequently shot and killed Ryan.

The hostage was not hurt.

An investigation is underway.
